Serviceunterbrechungen wie Updates oder Patches sind zwar ge\u00fcbte Prozeduren in IT-Divisions in Unternehmen. Aber eigentlich will man sie nicht. Nicht h\u00e4ufig und auch nicht mit unverh\u00e4ltnism\u00e4\u00dfig lang andauernden Downtimes oder mit einem Ressourceneinsatz, der nicht gerechtfertigt ist.<\/p>\n

Suse hat sich als Linux-Pionier und -Innovator bereits vor l\u00e4ngerer Zeit mit dem Thema Linux-Kernel-Patches sehr intensiv auseinandergesetzt und erhebliche Entwicklungsarbeiten unternommen.<\/p>

Das Resultat: Suse Linux Enterprise Live Patching, eine Komponente von SLES for SAP Applications, die faktisch eine Art Nonstop-IT-Nutzung unterst\u00fctzt. Die L\u00f6sung wurde zuerst f\u00fcr x86-64-Server (Hana-on-Intel-Server) in SLES 12 for SAP Applications (SP1) bereitgestellt, seit Kurzem ist sie auch f\u00fcr IBM-Power (Hana-on-Power-Server) verf\u00fcgbar (SP3).<\/p>\n

Ein Aspekt im Rahmen der Entwicklungen war, das klassische Dynamic Software Updating (DSU) zu erweitern, vornehmlich verwendet f\u00fcr Sicherheits-Patches (CVEs) und Patches mit limitierter Gr\u00f6\u00dfe. Entstanden ist eine Standard-Live-Patching-L\u00f6sung f\u00fcr den Linux-Enterprise-Einsatz mit hoher Automation.<\/p>\n

Dabei fanden modernste Linux-Technologien Ber\u00fccksichtigung. So etwa INT3\/IPI-NMI (mit selbstmodifizierendem Code), ein RCU-\u00e4hnlicher Update-Mechanismus, mount-basierte NOP-Space-Allokation oder Standard-Kernel-Loading\/Linking-Mechanismen.<\/p>\n

Die Suse-Live-Patching-Funktionalit\u00e4t in SLES for SAP Applications verbessert das Risk\/Security-Management sowie die Einhaltung\/Umsetzung von Com\u00adpliance-Vorgaben erheblich, indem beispielsweise Linux-Patches automatisch (proaktiv) vorgeschlagen und \u2013 falls gew\u00fcnscht \u2013 (automatisiert) realisiert werden. Und zwar ohne ein typisches Stop-and-go.<\/p>\n

Kombiniert mit dem Systemmanagement<\/h3>\n

Idealerweise wird das Live-Patching, wie all die anderen Building-Funktionsblocks in Suse Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, \u00fcber den Suse Manager verwaltet, gesteuert und kontrolliert.<\/p>\n

Der Suse Manager auditiert unter anderem den Software-Patch-Status. Konfigurationsver\u00e4nderungen k\u00f6nnen erkannt, ver\u00e4ndert oder auf einen gewissen Zustand in der Vergangenheit zur\u00fcckgesetzt werden, falls erforderlich.<\/p>\n

Es l\u00e4sst sich grunds\u00e4tzlich mit dem Suse Manager die Komplexit\u00e4t von Hana-Umgebungen signifikant minimieren. Und zwar weil nur von einer zentralen Stelle aus alle Komponenten und Elemente der Infrastruktur und deren Patch\/Update-Status sowie Gesamtsysteme an sich gemanagt werden k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n

Auch lassen sich damit einzelne f\u00fcr den Enterprise-Betrieb erforderliche Umgebungen (zum Beispiel f\u00fcr Entwicklungs-, Test-, Integrations- und Produktivsysteme) punktgenau steuern.<\/p>\n

Ferner ist es mit dem Suse Manager m\u00f6glich, Com\u00adpliance-Anforderungen wie etwa im Security-Umfeld vereinfacht umzusetzen oder die Einhaltung von Compliance-Vorgaben nachzuweisen.<\/p>\n

Last, but not least ergeben sich deutliche Kostenvorteile, weil vor allem h\u00e4ndische und wiederkehrende Arbeiten und erforderliche aufw\u00e4ndige Kapazit\u00e4ten\/Ressourcen f\u00fcr das Plattformmanagement gesenkt werden.<\/p>\n

Dabei ist das Management \u00fcber alle Hardware-x86-Intel-Anbieter, \u00fcber alle Hana-on-Power-Systeme, \u00fcber alle Hypervisoren und auch in gemischten Umgebungen m\u00f6glich \u2013 nativ und virtualisiert. Selbstverst\u00e4ndlich ber\u00fccksichtigt der Suse Manager auch das Cloud Computing oder DevOps-Modelle.<\/p>\n

Fazit<\/h3>\n

Ein Live- oder Online-Patching unterst\u00fctzt einen Nonstop-IT-Betrieb und damit im Endeffekt auch eine Nonstop-Gesch\u00e4ftskontinuit\u00e4t. Der Suse Manager hilft, sowohl das Online-Patching als auch alle anderen Suse-Funktions-Building-Blocks beim Hana-Einsatz zu verwalten, automatisiert zu steuern und zu kontrollieren sowie damit deutliche Kostenvorteile zu erzielen.<\/p>\n
