Software interfaces or software-side data interfaces are logical points of contact in a software system: they enable and regulate the exchange of commands and data between different processes and components. The term interface originally comes from the natural sciences and describes the physical phase boundary between two states of a medium. It figuratively describes the property of a system as a black box, of which only the surface is visible and therefore communication is only possible via this. Two neighboring black boxes can only communicate with each other if their surfaces match. SAP customers in particular should be sufficiently familiar with the term black box, as SAP R\/3 was the best known. The seamless integration of its solutions has always been a unique selling point of SAP. In recent years, however, SAP has somewhat lost sight of this virtue due to a number of cloud acquisitions.
