Enterprise BI platforms in direct comparison
For the BARC Score, the consulting and analyst firm evaluated 20 market-relevant international manufacturers of business intelligence and analytics platforms based on an extensive catalog of criteria and user evaluations.
Just a few years ago, most of the investments made by vendors were in improving business user orientation and data discovery capabilities (data preparation, visual analysis and guided advanced analytics) in their BI and analytics solutions.
The trend is moving in the direction of data management: functions for data preparation, data catalogs, and in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) and data science can be seen.
In the recent past, the use of machine learning (ML) in particular to automate a wide range of software functions has been among the biggest investments on the vendor side.
Manufacturers that already grew strongly last year are continuing their growth: Microsoft (especially Power BI), SAP (especially SAC) and Tableau. The latter moved into the market leader segment of the BARC Score Enterprise BI and Analytics Platforms this year.
Qlik continued its acquisition spree this year, acquiring Crunch Data and Attunity to strengthen its portfolio in AI and data management. Other vendors in the market leader segment of the BARC Score Enterprise BI and Analytics Platforms, which are particularly known for their broad product portfolios, are IBM, Oracle, Information Builders and MicroStrategy.
The "golden" middle of the BARC Score Enterprise BI and Analytics Platforms in the Challenger/Challenger range remains very similar to last year and includes vendors such as SAS, Infor, BOARD, TIBCO, Yellowfin, OpenText, TARGIT, Pyramid Analytics and Dundas among its representatives.
The Specialist segment is expanded by a new addition: Domo. Domo is a U.S. manufacturer of a cloud-based BI and analytics platform, which is characterized in particular by the large number of connectors and user-oriented interfaces.
Sisense, a specialist in embedded BI among other things, acquired Periscope Data in 2019, adding a cloud-based data pipeline and advanced analytics solution to its own portfolio. Dimensional Insight continues to strengthen its industry and content offering.
